JUNE 23/09 A Note from the Moderator:

I would like to thank all the people who came to the planning session that was held on June 14th 2009.  Your response to my request was overwhelming.
Thank you. About 60 people came and were able to stay through the afternoon to consider FBC in terms of 5 themes.  The 5 themes were the following:

1)  Leadership (what processes are there to be used to select leadership in our church, how should leaders be trained, how can more people be engaged in leadership and how should leaders be evaluated?)
2)  The Work of the Kingdom of God for First Baptist Church PG (how can we best fulfill the great commission at FBC, how do we balance the needs of the Family of FBC with the needs of our community in PG/ Canada/ World, how can we achieve more effective, authentic community and finally, what other structural options are applicable to FBC to accomplish this?)
3)  Pastoral Transition (how has the model of Lead Pastor and Associate Pastor(s) worked for FBC in the past, what improvements if any can be made to the pastoral leadership structure, what role should the resigning pastor take as FBC moves forward, and what should be the balance between professional and lay ministry and leadership?)
4)  Community Relationships (how should FBC build a stronger community of believers, how can each believer connect more meaningfully with their outside acquaintances and friends, how does the way FBC gathers and operates affect its community of believers and how can we care better?)
5)  Listening to God  (how do we find out what God is telling us, what is God telling you about next steps at FBC, how do we reconcile differences in perceptions of God’s will for FBC and how do we engage more of FBC family to listen to God?)

Unfortunately, many of you were unable to make the meeting.  It is important for you to pray and hear God about these themes.  The FBC Family needs to hear you about this.  Please pray, talk about these themes with your FBC brothers and sisters and share your ideas with each other, members of the FBC Administration Group (Bob Hlina, Fay Wong, Bill Cheung, Fred McLeod, Horace Ferreira, Jerry Roy, and myself (all of which can be reached @ connect@firstbaptistpg.com ).
Whenever you meet, have conversations about how God is speaking to you, listen to others, ask clarifying questions and encourage each other.
As we come to the fall, I believe God will show us a process and a way forward.

In Christ and cherishing you all,
Garry Knoll
